Disability Statistics

(From the CA Dept. Of Public Health)

I wanted to let everyone know about the recent release of the 2008 Disability Status Reports. This is a yearly publication put out by the Employment and Disability Institute at Cornell University. The report uses data from the American Community Survey (ACS), put on by the US Census Bureau.

There is a US report as well as separate reports for each state so it’s easy to make comparisons by state. The ACS looks at six types of disability (visual, hearing, ambulatory, cognitive, self-care and independent living.) (These disability types are slightly different from previous years because the six questions have changed a little bit, and this is the first year that vision and hearing impairments are separated out from an overall sensory type of disability). The report looks at disability overall and also focuses on employment issues. Comparisons are made to the population without disability and also across disability types.
