New Media is about connection and diologue! Find leaders within your social networks. Who opens your email, who reads you? Cultivate these relationships. Respond. Interact. Have fun! Be authentic!
You will make mistakes. Tell good news fast, bad news faster
There are many
social networking websites
Facebook and Twitter are the largest. Branding is key and these days you are the brand. Use consistent branding and identities across networks.
For example, I am www.twitter.com/jessielorenz, www.youtube.com/jessielorenz and www.jessielorenz.com.
Here's the bottom line. Social networks are about people and relationships. Cultivate them.
Facebook's member base is the size of the country of Brazil.
The fastest growing demographic on social networks are women 55 and over.
In 2009 Americans 45 years and younger spend twice as many hours on-line than watching TV.
In 2009 Gameing was more profitable than motion pictures. Don't ignore the gameing industry.
Ben's Game Is a good example of using games/apps for good.
Social Networks have changed the face of media by creating citizen journalists. There are many examples, including the Oscar Grant killing, the election in Iran and the Hatie earthquake where truth and suffering spoke to the world through mobile devices.

Lastly, David suggested being mindful of, "The Four Agreements," when nurturing your social networks.

Be impeccable with your word - Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.
Don’t take anything personally - Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
Don’t make assumptions - Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.
Always do your best - Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.
I loved the book, "The four agreements - don miguel ruiz's code for life, but that will have to wait for a future book review post...
