Sports teaches us valuible lessons about the world. In adition, sports has kept me out of trouble :)
What a fantastic piece of legislation- physical education and sporting opportunities for young people with disabilities!

So said Richard Simmons before attending a congressional hearing to fund physical education in the public schools. He went on to say,
"Three hundred thousand Americans died last year due to obesity-related diseases. Today's kids can't be like their parents. The child that works out is the child that learns better and lives better."

USA Clinches Bronze, Denmark Wins Gold at Lakeshore Foundation's International Goalball Classic
Birmingham, AL - After three rounds of overtime and a rain delay, Team USA finished with an exciting bronze medal victory over Japan in the Lakeshore Foundation International Goalball Classic on Sunday. An hour and 17 minutes after the first call of play, Lisa Banta scored the winning shot ending the game 3-2. "We pulled out a victory in the end, said USA Head Coach Ken Armbruster. "We have to give credit to Japan though, they played very well. We came. It got kind of ugly, but we won."
In the opening half, Japan's Tomoe Takada scored the first goal. Asya Miller quickly responded with a goal for USA. The score remained tied 1-1 in the second half with an unbreakable defense on both sides. USA and Japan then went into sudden death overtime which consists of two, three minute halves but were unable to break the tie. It took four rounds of one-on-one extra throws before Mieka Kato broke the tie in Japan's favor. In the 5th round of one-on-one extra throws, USA's Robin Theryoung responded with a goal. At the end of the 6th round, USA and Japan were still tied 2-2. Then, in the sudden death extra throws, Lisa Banta won the bronze medal for USA with a final score of 3-2. "I was very excited to throw an accurate shot to score on the Japanese," said Banta. "It was an excellent tournament. All four teams played very well, and we look forward to playing each other in September."
In the tournament's gold medal game, Denmark defeated Canada 4-0. In the first half, Denmark's Lykke Vedsted scored first. Kamilla Ryding quickly followed with another goal for Denmark. The Canadians were unable to hold off the Danes in the second half. Lykke Vedsted scored two more goals, bringing Denmark the gold, 4-0. Canada finished second overall in the Classic.
Earlier in the day, Canada defeated USA 3-1 and then Denmark defeated Japan 3-2. Here is a look at all of the scores from Sunday's action.

The International Goalball Classic served as a warm up for the Paralympic Games in Beijing in September. Beginning Thursday, four games were played in Round Robin fashion for four days ending on Sunday.
