The following is the statement I submitted to the organizing committee after being nominated to carry the olympic torch. The torch will make its way through San Francisco on April 9, 2008.
When I consider, what it is that sustains me, it always comes down to one thing. I try, with varying levels of success, to make a positive difference in my community.
For me, sustainability means the opportunity for all people in a community to participate fully in all aspects of citizenship. as a young woman with a disability I have dedicated my professional life to this.
I have helped bring accessible crossing signals to San Francisco, lead voter registration drives, and worked both locally and on the Federal level to pass Civil rights legislation.
As a 2008 Paralympic athlete, I have worked continually to improve my game and spread the Paralympic message of inclusion to disabled and non-disabled people alike.
Along this journey, I have been supported and inspired by many. From Helen Keller, to a life time of coaches, to professional role models, to a series of devoted guide dogs, I have only accomplished, with the help and love of others.
Simply put, I try to make a difference.
I try to make a difference in my work, I try to make a difference in my sport,
And I try to let others help me make that difference.
One world, one vision!
